Medieval Total War

OK, here's the problem, i've got 2 'puters linked on a LAN and i want to play MTW over it. Unfortunately the robbing gits that make this game tell me that in order to do so I have 2 buy 2 copies. Obviously i am a bit loathe to do this. Have tried to copy the disk1 with CloneCD, it copies OK but every time I try to use it it comes up with a "windows has caused an error at blah blah blah". Have tried to patch it with the no CD download which works OK when you play single player. When you try the multiplayer option though the screen goes black and it obviously sits there waiting for a CD that aint in the hard drive.

Anybody know how to copy it successfully.
