PS2 Laser Problems

I purchased a new ps2 only about 3 months ago but recentely after play FFX i have noticed that the game occasionally pauses in random places at random times. I was just wondering if this is the game acting up or if the ps2 lasers dying out already, i've tried other games, but they do not pause. I haven't had a modchip installed yet but i'm playing to get either the messiah or the magic 2 after i have saved up enough money.

Would usually be a dirty disk (wash in warm soapy water) or a dirty lens (clean with a CD cleaning disk with brushes).

I've already tried cleaning the dvd, and i have also inspected the cd for scratches, i'm going to take it to a friends house to see if the same thing happens.
