When I play my backups, the movies and sound are somtimes choppy or break up badly. At first I thought it was the media, but I databased some of my titles to see if the problems were consistent and they were not for any one type of media. Most of my media is verbatim now. I was wondering if there were any way to recalibrate the psx reader to help correct for this problem. I have an older used 5501 model. Thanks.

It is possible to re calibrate the laser......
If you open up your 5501, take the top cover off you will see the laser assembly, on the edge of the assemble you will see a copper coloured ribbon cable that attaches to the psx mobo, at the top of this ribbon you will see a small blob (pot, potentiometer), this can be twisted either clock wise or ani-clock wise. Check its position first through a magnifying glass so if it all screws up you can return it to its original position. Be carfull when adjusting this pot. only use finger pressure, dont be tempted to use a screw driver because you may rip the pot off the cable... Try what Zedy mentioned first..... if you consul works better on its edge or even upside down then its a sure sign that the laser needs attention......
