NWN question

OK. Here's the deal.

We bought a copy of NeverWinter Nights yesterday, just like we bought Baldurs, Baldurs 2, IceWind, etc, etc. We love these games. We play them multiplayer.

first we can't just copy the play cd. i fixed that with one of the patches here. now when i try to login to his server, it says that we have the same cd key. i tried the private lan patch, but no dice.

Could someone please tell me, step by step, what to do? i might seem like an idiot but i don't get this. and frankly, i'm frustrated. short of getting someone elses cd key, or buying another copy (not an option, i've bought the thing once) i can't figure out a solution.
