You are a little confused.

ASPI layer has nothing to do with cd copy protections. It is an acronym for "advanced scsi programer's interface" and is merely a collection of progs designed to instill some conformity to hardware/software interactions.

You seem to be thinking of ATIP layer maybe. This is a readable ONLY area of a cdr/cdrw which identifies the mdeia type, manufacturer etc.

It isn't a question of copying it, (as pressed cds do not contain it)more a case of hiding it from software which use it to id the cd as not pressed original.

This is not a defect of any cd writer (most readers cannot read atip) but actually an important function as the cd writer must now the characteristics of a cdr to be burned.

As Crispy says every CD-R contains an ATIP - this contains info on dye colour, length, manufacturer etc. Pressed cd's (originals) don't have an ATIP as they are pressed so don't need one. Most of the new games have a secondary protection to check for an ATIP; if an ATIP is found then it knows it's a copy. The problem with this protection (and it's the main reason why it's a secondary protection) is that only cd-writers can read ATIP; normal CD-ROM's cannot.
So the solution is to play the game in a CD-ROM. For those without a CD-ROM drive, then Hide CD-R Media is the solution as it hides the fact that the cd has an ATIP (works like an emulator).

ATIP cannot be copied or cloned, it is a physical thing only located on CD-R's.

"So if a Game contains an ATIP can it be copied???"
Yes the game can be copied but you will have to work around the ATIP check as above.

if a game contains an ATIP, its already a copy, and why would you need another copy?

Question

So what exactly is ASPI? Is it some sort of subchannel on the CD or something? I have no clue obviously...

I think he meant

A short description of ASPI layers have been given by Crispy above:
"It is an acronym for "advanced scsi programer's interface" and is merely a collection of progs designed to instill some conformity to hardware/software interactions. "
If you were talking about ATIP also, then just read the info above

Okay that answers my question. I'll try searching for more info on it again becuase I still don't completely understand the ASPI thing. Thanks for the info though...

Just some things I found from searching Google

"Is a software layer which allows communication between all kinds of software (applications, drivers, etc.) and your peripheral devices. The ASPI layer was created for SCSI devices, but later on the interface was adopted for other NON-SCSI bus types Many applications require the ASPI layers for communication with peripheral devices, such as CD-Rom's or CD-Writers. The Windows 95 and 98 versions have an outdated ASPI layer, Windows NT and 2000 come without the ASPI layer. So it is recommended to update your ASPI layers."

You can use Force ASPI to make sure you have the correct ASPI layer.
