When it play's psx and ps2 games on cdr disc's then the chip is working good! And if it also play's dvd movies your dvd-laser is also good.

Please try some other dvd-r's because the ps2 is very selected at this! Verbatim or pioneer are the best!
If you use a Pioneer a03 with firmware 1.68 update it to 1.80 and your disc will also read beter by your ps2!
If it still not work then you maybe must adjust your dvd-laser but this is not easy and dangeres!!
