DVD backups on mac and DVD Region X question

Hi all.

I'm thinking about ordering a no-solder modchip and have a couple questions.

1. Can you use DVD Region X instead of a Gameshark 2 with the no solder mod chip or is that just for use with the USB mod?

2. I have access to a DVD-RW on a G4 Mac. What software do those of you who make PS2 backups with a Mac use and is there anything special I need to know to make the backups on a Mac?
