Lazer probs
I have a 30002R pal console I have installed a R-Mod, It worked fine up untill the other day. now when I play some dvd-r titles I can boot them fine allthough when the ps2 needs to access allot of data at once on the disk during gameplay (GTA3) it freezes and displays a "dvd disk read error"
sometimes whan I have tried to boot some dvd-rip games I have heard strong, errrrrr louder than normal ticks coming from the ps2 dvd-drive, the mod worked 100% for a couple of weeks... is it possible that I have damaged the DVD laser? whats involved in a lazer re-allignment? Plaese help

more likely that you should try different cdr blanks.
gta 3 makes the laser move ALOT more than any game I saw so far, chances are it'll wear out the mechanics of the laser unit fast if you play it for hours each day.

the errors came up after only a few hours play, the exact same dvd-r boots and runs flawlessly on my flat-mates 35002/NEO2.5 so it has to be my 30002R/R-MOD..
just re-read what I posted regarding the dvd-rip's, didn't make myself very clear ....... when i boot some dvd-rip games my drives makes loud ticks like it's having problems reading the data , or sometimes spins up, really, really fast and then ticks loudly before failing to boot.. I know about the 640 mb dvd-rip limit on the r-mod... but can someone explain why this happens with this chip in particular? i'm still stumped.... |

Sounds like a laser calibration problem, depending on what DVDR your'e using. The only ones Id use are Verbatim,Apple or TDK,the laser in my ps2 struggles to play anything else.I wouldnt recommend messing with the laser pots as its easy to knacker your ps2 altogether (plenty of peoply have)
You can alway try to alter the height adjustment screw of the lens(pretty easy to do and you definitely wont break anything permanently).Just take the top case off your ps2 & remove the 4 screws on the cd drive housing, the adjustor screw is the small black screw to the left of the laser eye.A minute adjustment (1/16 or 1/8 th of a turn) either way might help.I did this on mine & it now boots some DVDr backups that wouldnt work or kept crashing before. Cheers. |

Apple brand dvd-r's all the way... like I said its strange because the same disks play skip and "DVD error" free on my mates 35002/neo2.5...
I'm sending my console away to have its laser tested and if needed.... repaired. sucks because its under a month old, allthough it would of had about 150 different cd-r's and dvd-r's through it in that time. thats what u get for going on holidays where the games are 2 bucks each... thanks for your input anyway. |

I doubt that your laser has gone bad - as you say it's a month old.
More likely either or both of: 1 Dirty lens. Clean it anyway with a CD cleaning Disk 2 Crap DVD rips for 2 bucks each
