Can the ps2 play CDRW?

It depends on what version of ps2 you have. If you have a version 5 like i have you can othjer versions don`t

I tried to play a CDRW on my V4 PS2, just some music tracks to see if it would read the CD.
The damn PS2 laser clicked loud a few times, when I took out the CDRW, it scratched a
ring around the surface, about 1/4" from the center edge! Piss me off!! Could it be that
actual laser lens can try to focus so high that it hits the CD??

That was the end of me trying CDRW's on a PS2!!

Ive played Dvd-rw's on a ps2, worked on dvd movies

I have no mod so I tried only with audio CDRW and all went ok..
I had some problems on reading DVDR - DVDRW movies, but it depended only by the brand of the media, with pioneer DVD it's all ok
