ARGH - The Sims Livin' Large and XP

Can someone tell me why living large refuses to run under XP? Firstly - it says I have to insert the CD (which I already have). So I got the no-cd patch and it runs. But after about 1 minute of gameplay the sound disappears and then I can't save. My cursor disappears. So I tried uninstalling it all and installing again... now it won't even run WITH the no-cd patch! Frustrating.

I really wanna play The Sims!
