Question PS2 Version Identifying

I've got a PS2 for my birthday and I know that it has been modified cus I can play cdr backup games, but first I have to boot up using DVDRegionX (no dongle).
I can also use this DVDRegionX to play DVD region 1 movie with success.
Please help me to identify what version of PS2 I have and what has been modified (what modchip used)? I feel very uncomfortable to unscrew the casing to find out what is inside but for your info it has 8 screws at the bottom.
All I know that it is a japan PS2 because when it is turned-on the screen is filled with unrecognizable japanese charactors.
I have been told that this PS2 was brought from HongKong.

Here are some Id numbers which may of help to you to identify the PS2 for me.

Model : SCPH-30000 (3-071-641-01)
s/n : J718xxxx (also on the box shows S01-718xxxx-L)
NTSC-J

Please help.

Thx in advance

1. Look at the underneath of the console. Do you see this symbol ?

2. Take off the expansion bay cover and look inside. Do you see this screw ?

If none of these Items are visible then you have a Version 3

If Item 1 is visible but not Item 2 then you have a Version 4

If Both Items 1 and 2 are visible then you have a Version 5

it's a japanese 30000 series PS2, the 3rd model released in japan.
have you tried booting an original US or european game with the region X swap?
if it works, you have an origa chip most likely. if not, it's most likely a cdr-only swap chip.

First of all thx.
According to D Soldier th console I have has item 1 but not 2 its a version 4 I have?

All the games I have is cdr only and I guess that I have the origa chip as you say. What can this chip do? Can I play any DVDr copy.
Any web sites or articles that I can learn about this chip. Also if I want to change another chip can it be done and what is the recommend modchip? Can I use the external usb mod? Also do I have to remove the already installed chip?

Thx

the japanese models don't follow the Vx type of numbering.

the origa can play original imports, cdr and dvd-r with a region x or AR2 with a single swap. all of them are booted the same way as the CDRs.
www.origachip.com has all the info you need.
if you want to be sure of what chip you got, open the bottom part of the case and look at the chip. if it's a long 28 pin chip with a brownish 3 pin thingy attached, it's definately the origa.

also, the origa is the best chip for jap models already. the USB mod is crap, no imports, no dvd-r.

Thanks Arakon you are g8.
I will definately try to open the case sometime (with help of friends) to verify the chip.

Arakon,
One last question. You mentioned that I can use a AR2 disk to do a single swap boot, can the AR2 image file I download from http://lanvo_1.tripod.com/quang/id5.html be used for this single swap trick. Also I've heard that I can use GameShark to do this same swap trick...is this right?

THX

you HAVE to use an original disc to swap, either the AR2 (or gameshark 2, same thing, GS is the US name) or a region x (cheaper and faster).
