Help finding a PS2 version

I am going tomorrow to buy a new PS2. I want to install the messiah that I got as a present. I need help trying to know how to choose the right v4 system. I live in the USA, so messiah only works for v4 systems. How do I know what system is? Is there anyway to know when the system is still inside the box? what about when is outside the box without opening it?
