Can anyone suggest an internal CDRW drive that will fit an IBM T20's Modular Ultrabay 2000?

Sorry, this is not a solution to your problems, just a suggestion..

Could you get a writer that connects to the PCMIA port, or the parallel port? I would have thought that heat would be an issue with an internal writer for a laptop.
