How do you do no-cd cracks?

Does anybody know of a websight or a tutoral I can download to get started. I tried the kind that you use W32dsm87. Then you use hiew and look for the error but it doesn't have the error in there.I think there is different kinds of protections. Can someone point me in the right direction to learn how to do it myself? Email me or write back thank-you.
