Diablo 2 backup troubles... :(

I've copied all three disks and have done a full install. Everything installed without any troubles.

The only problem is that when I try to play Diablo 2... it won't "see" the "play disc". The funny part is once in awhile it will and then it will let me play. I just updated to 1.06 but no effect... in fact it might be worse.

I used cloneCD on an Acer 8x4x32 with an off brand reader... though the reader reads everything needed for CloneCD and I've never had this trouble before. I've backed up tons of games without needing any patches... like C&C: Tiberian Sun.

Thanks for any help... though I want to fix this problem, I guess a crack or no-cd fix would be OK... I don't plan to play online.

Please find me at Teknophlier**********com... I might forget how to get here again.

Could some one at least tell me if they've made a "perfect" back up of Diablo 2. I just want to know if it's possible. Also... if you know how it seems to know that I have a copy. As in, what protection it uses on the play disc.

Thank you.

Your writer canīt read the subchannel data needed for backing up the SecuROM protection used by D2 - so try to make an image with your cd-rom with these CloneCD settings:
(Only CD2 - PlayDisc is protected btw)
Read options: Read subchannel data from data tracks
Write options: None
And you MUST NOT use your backup in your writer īcause new SecuROM used by D2 ##### ATIP to identify cd-r(w) backups.
If it still fails download the Daemon from ####://www.daemon-tools.com and have fun - it should work even with your unperfect backups.

HI... and thanks for the response...

I only use my reader for reading (not my burner) and it still doesn't work. My reader reads everything from cloneCD... and I've tried my copies in the my reader...

Question: Do I have to install from my reader and then run the game from the reader... as of now I've installed from my burner and then for the sake of troubleshooting, tried the play disc in my reader.

I've tried burning the using the settings from CloneCD database too, but still no effect. The only things I can't ##### in CloneCD are "Don't repair subchannel data" and "Burnproof".

Question: Is there any program or any way that can... "erase" the CD-R\Ws identity... as in, making my reader and my burner think that the CD is not an R\W but just a normal CD. Would finalizing do that???

Sorry if I'm bugging people or wirtting too much, but this is the first game I haven't been able to copy... or at least I think I've copied it, but I just can't play it.

Please respond... I think we're kind of close. I just need more info.

Yes, you should give it a try - I donīt remember correctly - D2 is old - but I think D2 runs from the lowest cd-drive letter only! Itīs also possible that the drive you installed from is stored in registry entry or iniīs ...

No way - but only few cd-roms read ATIP, but most writers, thatīs why I recommended to run you backup from your cd-rom ...

Please tell me what cd-rom you use, itīs possible that it canīt read the subchannel data either with would explain why youīre unable to backup D2 perfectly ...

Thanks again... I appreciate all the help.

OK... here it is... my burner of course is an ACER 8x4x32... and my "reader" is a Digital Research Technologies 56x... if it helps the model number is DRCDROM56. Also, if it helps this is what it can read (I got it off the box)

CD-R
CD-RW
CDROM-XA
CD-DA
CD-I/MPEG
Photo CD (Multisession too)
Karaoke CD
CD Movie
I-TRAX CD
CD Plus

it's also fully "MPC level 3 compliant".... if you know what that is.

for your info... this is how my computer is setup...
A: = Floppy
C: = Hard drive
D: = Hard drive
E: = Burner
F: = Reader

I'll unisntall Diablo 2 and then install it from my reader, I'll try to play and tell you how it goes.

Well... I uninstalled D2, restarted, reinstalled D2 from my reader and I still can't play it. I tried playing it before updating to 1.06 and after.

....I'm guessing my reader reads "ATIP"...

Is there a site somewhere that explains exactly what diablo 2 is doing... and what other games have this type of protection. I'm kind of looking for a lot of detail on what's going on.

Thanks.

Why donīt reassign your drive letters?
Just give your writer letter h: and your reader g: and see what happens if you install and play from your reader ... (you wonīt have to reassign and reboot twice if you reassign the letters to some currently unused) ...
if ut fails you can still go back to e: & f: ...

just ##### out ####://www.daemon-tools.com where youīll find infos and hints how to identify and how to copy the different protections; the Daemon may also help you ...
