Need advice on booting ps2 backups (with non-discript modchip and AR2)

A million thankyous to anyone who can shed any light onto that which has left me in darkness.

A listing of my bits and pieces:

+ PAL PS2 ver 3 (I think)
<10 screws about the base, no electrical hazard logo there either, opens up pretty easily>

+ AR2 ver 2 with mem card dongle attachment

+ One "backyard job" non-descript external modchip (which I was foolish enough to buy)
<I've soldered the one wire needed for it to work>

+ NTSC backup of Devil May Cry

For my "weird" modchip to (supposably) work I need to do the following:

To play PSX backups, after placing the game into the drive and closing the tray, the machine then needs to be reset 3 times for the game to boot.

To play PS2 backups, after placing the AR2 disc into the drive and closing the tray, the machine then needs to be reset twice (2x), start game without cheats, swap discs,... etc.

I can boot PSX games using the aforementioned method, but cannot boot my PS2 backup.

Therefore;

Is it my mod?

Is it my AR2 version?

Am I doing something wrong?

Does anyone know what type of mod I have?

Thanks for reading my problem.

When I try to boot my PS2 backup, the PS2 seems to lock-up. This happens after swap discs. Could it be that my version of AR2 is incompatible with my neokey mod?

S-Box

I today received an S-Box but no where did it mention being a Neo Key.

I basically boot up either PSX orPS2 games by putting the little switch to the right. Put in AR2 v2, choose start game without code, swap the disc and away you go. (after pressing X to continue)

For PSX games you may need to use the second CD, I can't remember.

Anyway hope this helps.

p.s I don't need to do all that resetting stuff either..
