What happens when you try to play a backup game in a psx without modchip or bootcd?
I wanna know if anyone can tell me what happens if you try to play a backup cd without having a modchip or bootcd, because my cousin bought a used psx and I don't know if it has modchip or not so I sent him a copy of tomb raider 4 patched (The patch that allows you to choose pal or ntsc and allow you to turn on all the cheats) to check what happens and he told me that when he puts the cd on, the playstation screen comes and after that nothing happens and the screen turns black. I tried playing in my computer and it goes well. Can anyone tell me by that if it's possible to tell with that information if he has a modchip or not. He lives in another country so I can't take a look in the psx.
Thanks a lot |

With no mod chip installed i would expect the "insert PSX disc" screen or the memory card screen.
When you said "the playstation screen comes up" was this the screen with the PSX logo on a black background? If so then the PSX recognises the disc but is failing to continue booting for some other reason (mod chip is installed). If your talking about the first PSX logo you get when you turn the PSX on (orange/red logo on a white background), then its probably not moded.

By the sounds of what you are saying then spooky has already answered the question.
If the PSX console isn't chipped then it should enter the ' CD player ' or ' memory card ' screen if you insert a copied game. If the game is reaching the black PSX screen then there must be some form of modification as this the boot -up process of the disc and therefore the Psx console is recognising the disc. |

Hi folks thanks for all but my cousin didn't say anything about the psx asking for a cd or something and I don't know but I think that the psx screen is the psx logo with black background. If so can you tell me what could possibly be wrong with the cd? I didn't send it by post, it was my aunt who was here that took the cd there. My sister is going there and I'm sending "psx import player" to him to see if it works. Does anybody has any problems with tomb raider 4 patched?

NooK.... Lets say that your cousins PSX is booting or at least partly booting, the PSX logo on a black back ground is visible, then we can assume that the PSX is modod!
So we can also assume that the consol itself has probably been thrashed by some previous owner, therefore certain parts of the laser assembly have probably ####ted to ware and an adjustment is required (possibly the reason for its sale in the first place!). Unfortunatly i need to know the model number of the offending PSX before i can give you anymore advice on how to cure this. The model number is located on a lable on the underside of the consul and would ####t with "SCPH-????". See if you can find out and i try to help some more!
