Alright. I'm new to these boards, so I might as well start by helping someone else out, right?

The good thing about a the double-swap is that you don't need any sort of mod chip installed on your PSX (internal or external).

First off, there are a couple things you need to know about your PSX in order to really pull off a double-swap successfully:

1) your PSX has two speeds, 1X and 2X. It's pretty easy to tell when the drive is reading at 1X and when it's reading at 2X (2X is much faster than 1X).

2) your PSX has a little lid sensor thingie on the inside of the drive. Depending on what model number your PSX is, it may be in varying locations under the lid. All it is, is a little button that gets depressed when the PSX's lid is closed. In order to perform a double-swap, the lid is going to have to remain open, but the lid sensor needs to be depressed so the PSX thinks the lid is closed. Most people manage this with a spring or something, but I used to use a paperclip (until I got a spring, that is).

On to the swapping. You're going to need an original black-backed PSX game. It can be any black-backed disc; even the demo disc that came with your PSX. The deal is, is that when the PSX gets turned on, the first thing it does is ##### to see if the disc inside it is a genuine PSX disc. On all legitimate black-backed discs, there are sectors of data at the very last data track that tell the PSX that it's an original disc. Unfortunately, cd-burners can't burn this data onto your backups (as far as I know), as they are read as "bad sectors."

Regardless, you're gonna need an original disc. Open up the lid of the PSX, place your little device or whatever onto the lid sensor. Now, put your original into the PSX an hit power. The original disc will start out spinning at 1X. The white PSX screen will appear, and at the tail end of it the disc will begin to spin at 2X. Once this happens, quickly pop the original out, and place your backup in.

Now, the black PSX screen will appear, and the backup will slow down to spin at 1X again. Then after a couple of seconds, it'll start to spin at 2X. Once it reaches 2X, the black PSX screen will fade out, and the backup will begin to spin at 1X. Once this happens, you need to quickly swap out the backup, and put the original back in.

The original will spin at 1X, and then it'll start to spin at 2X almost immediately. This is where you do a final swap, replacing the original with your back up. Obviously you'll know if it worked if the backup loads.

While I was writing this, for the life of me I couldn't remember where that second swap occurred at: so I went to my PSX, took off my external mod chip, and tried to perform a double-swap. I hadn't tried in over a year, but the backup I tried to play (FFV) worked fine. So I'm absolutely positive that this trick will work.

Man. I don't shut up, do I. Well, you asked for every detail, and I think you got it. Hope this helps.

P.S. A PSX is a pretty delicate piece of technology. If you try this too often, you may end up damaging your unit. I would suggest getting yourself a mod chip, preferably an external one that'll plug into the parallel port of your PSX (it's what I have, and it doubles as a Game Shark; it's called a "Game Enhancer"). I shy away from having to solder anything onto my PSX because, for one, it can get totally damaged if not done properly, and two, if you put a soldering iron in my hands, I'll be on fire in a about three minutes.
