Bin/Cue vs. .cdi Files

Why are most PSX/PS2 games imaged in bin/cue format, while DC is .cdi?

I have absolutely no problem with DJ using .cdi files, but I've yet to burn a single successful backup of any PSX/PS2 game. And yes, I've tried everything, read all the FAQs, etc.
