Action Replay Won't Play Backups

Mostly everyone knows how to play backups with an Action Replay - but just recently, I bought an old one (1997) Datel Action Replay (version 2.3) and the thing is, it won't play backups!
Your s'posed to stick in the copied CD once the orginal PSX CD spins down at the Action Replay menu....however, the orginal never spins down!
I'm completely lost.

i think it is only the bootlegged copies of the action replay will play backups.
