MOD CHIPS 4 PS2!

I have gathered that it is just the same to backup ps2 games than it is to backup psx games but what about the chips - i have a mod chip that fit into the back of the psx - will it work, or do you have to get an internal chip or are mod chips available for the psx. 1 last thing can you use a ps2 action replay cart as a mod chip??? THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
