I had that same problem a year ago. All you have to do is open up your PSX and check your Modchip.

Make sure it is sodered in correctly and that all the wires are connected. When it happened to me, I couldn't play backups or originals and I got the black SONY screen each time till I fix the chip.

Hope this solves your problem.

First check your copies work in a chipped 750x or 900x model PSX, that will tell you if the copies are good.
If you have an older PSX (100x, 5xxx) sometimes the copies are good enough for a 750x or 900x but not good enough for the older models because the later models have better laser units. If your copies dont work in the 750x or 900x models then you Cd writer is on its way out or the software is falfunctioing. If they do work it could be either the modchip the laser in your PSX or a combination of the laser in your PSX and your CD wriyter wearing. When a CD writer starts to wear the first thing that happen is the older PSX models start to have problems with games. If this is the case you will probably not have trouble with other CD's such as audio and PC data, that is because they use superior laser units unlike the old PSX models. you can always try the laser tune trick. Other signs of a wearing CD writer is audio skipping or FMV skipping, if you have not noticed this then your writer is probably OK. If you laser need the tune trick then games will probably load when the PSX is upside down.

Hop that helps
