Hmm..damn it! Well, blacklisting programs isn't a new thing since Securom have done it for a while...Maybe I should buy IGI2 and give this one a closer look....some new fancy features perhaps

yeah, this blacklisting is a bit rediculous. Alcohol does have legitimate purposes besides piracy or even making legitimate backups of games, it's actually rather good for making lots and lots of copies of unattended system restore or installation discs, something I've used it for extensively (I got stuck with making recovery/setup cd's for all 840 or so computers at my workplace, since we finally got all the hardware standardized and the software set standardized)

Personally, I hope these companies that pull this crap with blacklisting get sued when someone legitimately purchases their product, and has never used things like alcohol for any illegal purpose, can't use it without uninstalling other software first....

can you say antitrust lawsuit? :-)

Angry

It would seem the new Sims Superstar expansion is also using Safedisc 2.90. It would not load, even with the original CD in the drive, under Windows 2000. I didn't see this forum before or I would have tried un-installing Alcohol 120. But what's interesting to note is, after I upgraded the machine to Windows XP, it will play fine now, even with Alcohol installed.

I was able to make a 1:1 backup using Alcohol and it played fine from the backup copy.

Blacklisting by these companies is complete BS!! It's bad enough that MicroShaft is taking inventory of what's installed on my machine, but not letting me play a game just because I have some other software installed is going too far. Maybe we should talk to the EFF about filing a class action suit against Macrovision for this type of crap so it doesn't go unchecked.

Well I do understand your anger, cos I am angry too about the fact that a cloning prog like alc120% gets blacklisted, but that is because of its emulating virtual drives and protections feature. It shares the destiny of almost all emualting progs.....and somehow (no, don't throw any stones) I do understand the game industry's reasons....

Well I discovered that apparently during my upgrade to XP, Windows decided to disable my virtual drives for me and render Alcohol unusable. Once I re-installed Alcohol, the game stopped working. Un-install Alcohol, and it plays fine.

Update - I upgraded to Alcohol 1.4.3.410, and the problem went away. The game loads fine now with Alcohol installed.

Tried to install Rise of Nations which uses 2.9x using Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120, didn't work.

well..it was expetable....since alcohol got so much reputation in a so short period...the manufacturers had to do something about it...as for any of you that gets angry with the whole "scenic" i have to say that you should get used to this...it will always be a game that has no end...no limits...there will allways be new and better protections and new and better ways of beating them...(this forum is full of examples!!!)
