BUY ALL ORIGINAL GAMES.....and don't even try to play backups.... All you will end up doing trying to play backups without a mod chip is have a VERY NICE PS2 that can be used as a paperweight..........

Bad Idea all around

I used to do the knife trick--got flamed pretty bad for it too. When I finally gave in and installed a mod chip, I poked around a bit--I had no idea the damage I had caused, and the potential damage I could've caused.

I had knocked loose the 2 rubber grommets that help stabilize the front of the tray--it explained why I was having trouble loading some previously operable backups--excessive missreads.

One of the gears in the drive tray assembly now has a deep groove in one spot because of the excess pressure placed on the assembly by forcing the tray in and out.

The guide track for the pin that raises and lowers the head unit cracked and had split off on one side--had to do some creative artwork with JB-Weld epoxy to repair that.

Basically, a 10 minute no-solder plug in mod upgrade that only cost me $14.99 US wound up taking almost 3 hrs to install--and I probably would have lost my PS2 by the end of summer if I had continued on as I had been.

What your cousin has done is "hot-wired" the reset switch/traymotor assembly so it will open the drive tray without the PS2 knowing it. Risky Business there as well--without being able to take advantage of the PS2's internal routines that stop the tray at each end of the track, you risk damage to the motor and the gear assemblies.

If you are willing to open your case and do this rewiring and risk losing your entire investment.....why not spend just a little money and do it more safely? I know the Messiah's arent available for the US v5's and up yet, but they will be here soon. That may be a bit intimidating for a novice, but a clip is in the works that will have fewer wires. If you don't feel comfortable with the wiring, pay someone to do it--or if you are just too impatient (like me) get the no solder plug in mod. I got mine from http://www.modchipinc.com/pages/nosolder.htm on sale for $9.99 plus $5 S/H. You can use a CreditCard or Pay-Pal. It was a breeze to install, and I highly recommend it for anyone who can't/won't afford the Messiah--$15-$20 dollar investment could save you up to $200 to replace/repair your system.

Of course there are no guarantees for compatability with backups, and you have to use a Gameshark2 CD ($30 at my local Wal-Mart--which I had bought one anyway to make games easier for my 6 yr. old nephew). The DVD backups are tricky to get started, but the PSX/PS2 CD's are easy to boot-up. Of course, the Messiah is the way to go because it can "cold-boot" nearly anything that is thrown at it.

Good Luck!
