tmpgenc converts avi to mpeg1, i believe. svcd and vcd is a personal choice, most people choose vcd, and i would as well
. there may be a few picture quality / sound quality issues, but i think they only come into it if you are ripping ac3 audio as well. i cant remember. try www.divx-digest.com or www.doom9.org if you want more specifics.

Try This
If ya no how to ripp to avi and divx(mpeg4) But dont no how to make a vcd (mpeg1) or s-vcd(mpg2) I guess your not using nero??
If not get Nero 5.5.3.5 (thats the one i like) install it click on vcd, when u have done that tick ntsc or pal (what eve it was when ya ripped it) click new, drag and drop your avi or divx to the left\h side, click burn, pick your speed and a way you go :-) if it was a divx 4mat it will take ya about 90 mins to incode then nero will burn it at what speed ya ask it to do.. if it was a avi u might get a message come up say blah balh blah just click turn off and dont incode, hope this helps ya.. P.s if ya no all about nero then i done alot of typing for nothing..lol regards iceman

This last step is done from Roxie Platinum or nero 5.5... When you choose the burn process, you pick you want a vcd. As for the second part of your question. The svcd, has better quality. If you are backing up your dvd's to vcd's, well, then the quality is going to be a little reduced anyhow. I can not really see the difference by my eye on the TV when both are played. There is more space required for a svcd as well. On average 200-500 mb, I know this is a wide range, but that would corrispond to the dvd's that range from about 4.5 - 7 gig dvd's. Hope this helps.
