AO3 - yeah, the GC disks are not 'proper' mini-DVD disks, but as you say, not all games will use all the 1.8gig of the disk. Also, you can get PS2 backups on CDR - I assume they remove the FMV from the origional DVD to do this.
You may be able to use CloneCD to rip the GC disk - not tried it yet though.
