I trust you are reffering to a PAL system. If so there are a few ways of telling what version your system is. The guide is down below...

V1 or 2 - Only NTSC systems - Not available in PAL countries
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disconnect your PS2 from the power and TV, remove all memory cards and controllers and sit it on your lap or on a table. Turn the console upside down and look at the base. There are little square caps over the screws. If there are 10 square caps on the bottom then you have a V1 or a V2 console.

V3 - First PAL console
---------------------------
This too should have 10 screws on the bottom. This is the first ever PAL console. Only imported consoles will be NTSC. You can tell which systems are PAL or NTSC because on the back of the console, there is a sticker with the Model Number e.g.: SCPH 30003R. Below this there is a little blue patch which says either PAL or NTSC. Easy!

V4 - Second generation in PAL countries
--------------------------------------------------
I have a PAL V4 console. These are easy to distinguish. Look at the back of the console and remove the Expansion Bay cover. Look at the back of the cover. If the back of the cover has a metal insert then your console is a V4. If it has no insert and is made entirely from plastic then you have a V5 or V6 console.

V5 + V6 - Third generation in PAL countries
------------------------------------------------------
These are not too easy to distinguish. You need to take the PS2 apart and access the Main Board. At the bottom, there is a little gap in the board. Look to the right of this gap. There are two ribbon connectors. Look at the second connector to the right. If you have a V5 console, the connector pins will be facing down toward the Main board. If you have a V6, the connector pins will be at the top of the connector. This is the only difference I am aware of.

Hope this helps you. Remember, this is for PAL consoles. I don't know about NTSC consoles.
