The infamous GTA3 and copying

I have gotten GTA3 to run without the CD using Daemon Tools and Blindread, however my harddrive is obviously too slow (Nero reports it at 5mb/sec) and the graphics are choppy and the audio skips around alot. However from the CD it plays fine. This leaves me to say "how do I burn a SDv2 disk?" Well, I have an HP8200e (the "e" stands for "external") Writer but using Blindwrite--which is compatible according to the website--it says the cd was created successfully. However, when trying to read the disk my system hangs and the CD sounds like it is being "reved up." The only option I have there is to then use ctrl+alt+del and End Task on GTA3. I really don't want to buy another HD, but there has to be a way to get it to CD since everything seems to be compatible and I have heard of people burning it before. Help me please.

Sys specs:
P3-800mhz
384mbSDRAM
Geforce3ti500
Win98SE
CenDyne DVD-ROM
And the crappiest HD out there...
