DVD readers that won't read CDR's

My friend has a DVD drive on his comp. but it won't read CDR's, when you put a CDR in, it always says busy, and it never stops being busy, is there a way to crack this or does he just need a newer one?

what kind of cds have you tried?are you sure they were pc cds?

what all have you tested on the drive? will it read pressed cd's only ? my home (non pc) dvd player cant read cd-r's, a lil too shiny for it

my guess is as good as yours, i'm guessing that it can only read pressed cds
