Mod chips illegal in us ?!?!

I was calling local small business and home run computer stores asking could anyone do instals for me. One guy told me that FBI has deemed mod chips for PS2 illegal and that he knows of 2 people that lost their houses due to a 250,000 fine when cought installing them! he then went on to say that fbi is not only going after sellers but USERS! he said the FBI downloads mailing lists of people and goes after them when ordered over the net from out of country sources! IS ANY OF THSI TRUE?! i cannot seem to find a proffessional instal so now i am considering a no solder chip i can do myself but is it safe? hehe

I figured as much =) it was just some lame excuse for them not wanting to do it . but hey anyone reading this please check my other post like no solder ps2 mod chip worth it? i need a lil info. hehe like say i dont have a dvd burner BUT my friend does and he makes a dvd backup of a play station dvd game with his burner then sends me the image. can i write it to a cdr without a dvd writer'? or like if i dont have a dvd burner there is no way?

Unless your friend sends you a DVD Rip to CD-R I wouldn't bet on it!! Example would be Final Fantasy 10 is about 4.20 gig's so if you have a CDR Drive which burns only 700 megs that's only .16%..I know that there are DVD Rips to CD's but it has split into several CD-R's and it's been known to cut stuff out from the DVD original so why bother?! This is old news but Onimusha was split into 4 CD's..Why? Just make a Real 1:1 copy of it..Also the hassle of downloading massive gigs..It's too much..
Last No solder Mod Chip isn't quite that great!! Matter fact I heard not too great stories about it!! My suggestion is get Messiah or Neo 4(Good But not quite Great as Messiah and too many people doesn't like it) or Origa/Nova chip..
Unless you have Ver.5 PSX2 which is not compatible with
Neo 4 or Messiah at the time just get the Origa/Nova..
My opinion of course and trying to save you the time with the hassle later..Wait for Messiah 2 which is compatible with Every Console and it will be out on 07/02 or 08/02 Estimate..

By the way on the FBI cracking down I somewhat believe it because I heard(Don't quote me on it) there was operation but it was seized while back..So I think someone's pulling someone's leg..Common?!
I mean if that's the case we all should be arrested and besides I know it sounds strange but there is another purpose for the Modchip anyway..To play Original Imports..Remember that not every game will be out to the US or any country for that matter so Modchip will help you play the original(import)game..
No offense to anybody if insulted from reading this message..
