HELP: Clicking Sounds and Read errors after Messiah install

Hi,

I just completed my Messiah install on my V4 NTSC, and everything seems to work just dandy -- however my DVD drive makes some loud clicking noises when I load a game, and only occationally will it actually load the game.

I know it works cuz it has loaded a couple of times

Anybody have a great idea ??

Also to be noted I did have some problems getting the solder to stick on the SCEX connection (it read outs 0 ohms on the multimeter over the black piece which seems wierd, but the PS2 boots ok so I assume it is OK).

Wirering for for SCEX RESET, 3.3V and GROUND is done un ATA-33 cable, the rest in ATA-100.

Help is much appriciated...

Buffet

could be a bad connection. also make sure all ribbon cables are firmly connected on both sides.
if it still fails, try making the wires to the chip shorter.

Arakon,

I checked all connections and they seem fine, I reseated all the ribbon cables and they look good too.

I noticed that when I initially boots the PS2 this mechanic clicking sound appears - after resetting a couple of times the games, movies etc. loads correctly.

When the clicking soung appears I can see the laser assembly moving towards the outside tracks on the dics, but then about 1 cm out from the middle of the dics it make the mechanic click sound and the moves back - this repeats itself a few times, and then the PS2 reports a dics read error.

any other ideas ??

Also to be noted I did have some problems getting the solder to stick on the SCEX connection, when I use a multimeter to measure the resistance over it, it read outs 0 ohms, so the question is whether I have fried it out ??, but the PS2 boots ok so I don't know...

I take it that we are talking DVD-Rs here not DVDs nor CDs. The laser assembly moves out in order to follow the groove along which the data is written. This is done to determine the read power and frequency to be applied.

When it hiccups the clicking you hear is the lens being moved up and down to try and focus and from sie to side to find the groove.

So either or both of two problems come to mind:

1 The disk is dirty and needs cleaning in warm soapy water

2 The laser azimuth adjustment or its parallax are wrong. I think I've posted on those two subjects in the forum (do a search in my name).

Then there is the old faithful - which ytou should do anyway, and that is to clean the lens with a cleaning disk.

Charlie_ps2,

Thanx M8 - Actually it is the same problem on both original DVD's, movie DVD's, CD back-ups, original imports etc.

I'll try to clean the lens first (the disc is 100% clean), then the adjustment from your old posts -- it is funny though I have not touched the laser assembly at all while installing the MOD, and I had no problems before modding, but hey, the mounting may be sligthly different, afterall I have had the PS2 open about 5 - 8 times.

I got a rather interesting answer from http://www.vdo-specialties.com/ concerning what the error could be - check it out;

"Yes it the same problem, those chips simply do not work and never had, they fry the machines. We can fix it, if you remove the chip, you will find that the unit will report a disk read error, it most likely blew the laser. Which we do sell. That's why we still only install the old idea of chips.

WE no longer installed these chips as we blew quite a few units chasing a wild goose."

These poeple claim they have 9+ years expiriance in repairing PS2's (rather amazing since the PS2 have not been out for 9 years) -- I take it that these guys are smooking something that does lees than desirable things to their judgement. What is your take, any known problems with the Messiah ??

btw. if something is really f***ed in the PS2, do you know a reliable guy/gal in the US that can help ??

Thanx

Buffet

I'd say they simply suck at installing. that's the first time I heard of that, I have installed several messiah myself and got one in my ps2 as well, and it works perfectly fine.

if everything else fails, try what I mentioned above.. shorten the wires. try 1-2 inches for the 3.3V and GND, and 2-3 inches for A-I. it could cause the probs you mention, it seems to do the weirdest stuff.
also triplecheck you didn't mix up any pins on the bios chip, I did that on my first install and the result was that it sat there for a long time saying "reading disc", then returned to the browser.

I think I actually found out what is wrong...

I think I might have fried a couple of components by heating them too much (not to smart at all...).

I have attached a picture where I have circled 3 components in red - The 'black resistor' component reads 0 Ohms (which I don't think it is supposed to), I dont have a reading on the 'brown', and the 'big black one', I vaguely remember that the 'black resistor' read out something like 3.3 but I may very well be wrong -- can anyone help me out here please ?? The values on readout method would be great, cuz them I can get the components from my local eletronics outlet

Thanx

Buffet
