Having problem getting Hp 9100 to read 1x

I can't get my HP 9100 to read at 1x speed. In every program that I tried setting it to 1x speed it automaticly reads with 4x or 8x speed, but it writes with 1x speed. I need to get it to read with 1x speed cause the discs which are a little scrathed always result in skipping copies. What should I do. !!!HELP!!!. I have 1.0c firmware. Reply !!!PLEASE!!!.
