Which DVD Writer to make Backups?

I am looking to buy a DVD writer and I would like to make backups of retail DVD's. Which writer should I buy? I have a decent budget and would welcome advise from the experts. Thanks in advance for anyone kind enough to help.

I am not to sure but isnt a DVD writer only capable of writing onto DVD Ram and not rom as if this is the case you would only be able to playback via a P.c and not a standalone unit.If I am wrong on this the price of a blank disc it would be cheaper to buy the original DVD

No..There is two types of DVD Back up storage device..
1.DVD-R Drive Example: Pioneer A03
with this it is quite possible make all your homemade DVD-R's to play back at the Any DVD players including PC interface version

2.DVD-Ram Drive
With this one it is only possible to play back only on the DVD-Ram Drive..DVD-Ram is sort of like a tape Drive where the DVD-r is Recordable like the
CD-R's..
Also DVD-R (A03) has capability to burn CD-R's and CD-RW as well on 8x equalvilent level for CDR and 4 x for CDRW's I believe..
It burns DVD-R's at 1x-2x and DVD-RW at 1x..
