Unhappy I need some basics

I've downloaded a couple of fixed .exe's for ghost recon. I've copied the game to both CD-R and CD-RW media discs. I used The hp software and nero burning rom to make the copies. The instructions for no cd play, as well as back-up, direct you to replace the original GHOSTRECON.EXE file with the downloaded fix. In the first instance I tried to drag and drop the fixed .exe over the original. Since that did not work I also right clicked on the original (copied to CD-RW) and tried to delete it. That did not work. So, here is my question in two parts.

How do you replace the original .exe with the fixed .exe?
How do you create a temporary directory, access it, and copy files to it?
Pretty ignorant I know but we all start somewhere and this does not fall under the catagory of: knowledge I was born with.
My writer is hp 9100 series

Cool

K, Looks like I figured this out on my own. As thegame installs hit browse when prompted for folder options. Type in C:\TEMP\CD.
Easy when you know the trick.
