ps2 patch trouble

i recently successfully copied midnight club and tekken tag for ps2 with the latest version of nero. despite this, when i tried playing the games they did nothing. do these need to be patched? do all ps2 games need to be patched?
if so, can i patch cds i have already burned?
i would appreciate any information regarding patching (websites, downloads, tutorials, etc.) as i am a total novice. also, can anyone please send me information regarding ripping playstation 2 dvds onto cds.
