Wizardry 8, what's with the cracks

It seems there's been a lot of confusion over the Wizardry 8 update patches and the associated cracks. Apparently I helped create some of that confusion, so I'll try and set the record straight. The v1.22 wiz8.exe no-cd is for the Sirtech 12/12 patch; NOT for the latest 12/23 patch which, I'm told, uses wiz8.exe v1.23. Thanks for setting me straight IXB!
For some reason, I had thought both the 12/12 & 12/23 Sirtech patches had used the same v1.22 wiz8.exe file. This is NOT the case. Apparently, the v1.22 wiz8.exe no-cd will *partially* work with the 12/23 Sirtech patch, but fails if you try to load a v1.23-specific save game. Ouch! A real 12/23 (wiz8.exe v1.23) no-cd will have to wait until I get hold of an unwrapped (un-Safedisc'ed) wiz8.exe v1.23 or an unwrapper that can handle Safedisc 2.51.

Thanks for clearing that up! We're all looking forward to the 12_23 nocd... So do you usually go off of the Fairlight release, which seems to be an unsafedisc'd version but not a nocd?

I'm going to bump this, for a few reasons.

1. The GCW page for wizardry 8 still lists the Softbeard (and v1.2.2 Farlight releases) as working with the 12_23 patch. They really do not. There's even a special note addressing it saying it works.

While the game still runs with the 12_23 patch and the old EXE, you are not running the v1.2.4 executable. The version is visible in the upper right corner of the main game splash screen.

I have verified that the bug which was the main reason for the release (toxic cloud overpowered) is not fixed when using the v1.2.2 executable with the 12_23 patch. Firsthand. Still Broke.

I have also verified that the version of the WIZ8.EXE shipped with the two Sirtech patches differ SIGNIFICANTLY, even though their size is exactly the same.

Thanks for the hard work, also waiting for the v1.2.4 EXE.

I know SIRTECH supoort is giving out un-safedisc'd EXEs to people who are having trouble with the copy protection. But I do no have one.

Please update the GCW Wiz 8 page! :-)

Bump.

Also, I heard over a week ago that Fairlight had released an unsafedisc'd 1.2.4 EXE. Either the distro networks are stupid, or someone at GCW is lazy

If anyone can get the unsafedisc'ed v1.24 wiz8.exe ('fixed' exe) please post it or contact me.
BTW: all references to v1.23 wiz8.exe in my original post, should be v1.24. DOH!

Actually, I can find no mention of a Farlight 1.2.4 release of an EXE at isonews.com. (I hope you are right, though!) The 1.2.2 release is there.

They usually get everything. Do you have an .nfo from the release?
Am I just missing it on isonews?

OK, I know when to smack myself across the face.

Farlight did release a cracked exe for 1.2.4. Here is the .nfo. Found it on isonews. So, HunterZ is right. No one has bothered to give it to GCW.

Please, if you have the following Farlight release, send it to GCW!

Title: Wizardry 8 Patch 2 Cracked
Url: n/a
Group: FLTDOX
Released: Tuesday January 1st, 2002
Size: xx/01
NFO: Viewing plain text [switch to java mode] [save .nfo]

How To Use:
===========
Unzip files to game dir (it includes patched exe)

Why call it patch 2?:
=====================
Well many places are calling this patch different things, the W8 site
####://www.wizardry8.com/index2.html, is calling it
Wiz8Patch2001_12_23_release, other sites are calling it 1.24, 1.12.23.
We decided to simply release it as patch 2!

Whats in this anyway?
=====================
This patch includes all of the changes which appeared in the 12_12 patch,
and: Corrected duration and poison damage done by Toxic Cloud spells
(effects are no longer permanent!) Corrected bug which reported a bad
monster ID assertion on line 203. Drink type items now deplete upon use
(fixes Ales, Brew) Autosaving will not occur unless this option is ON.

From the FAiRLiGHT team we would like to wish you a Happy New Year!

I've got the latest patch cracked by Fairlight, version 1.24 without safedisc. I have sent it to the GCW staff today, so lets see how long it takes them to get it out.
Softbeard, do you want me to send you the cracked exe? If so, contact me with a way to get it to you, your hotmail just bounce...

The v1.2.4 patch (Farlight) has appeared on GCW and the Wiz8 page has been updated.

What more can a old hacker from Jersey ask for? :-)

I'm sure it took the efforts of multiple people for this to happen so quickly. Thanks again.

I don't what's going on with the fixed exe on my machine but once I use patched exe the game texts are completely messed up !
The inventory is unusable, item description utter fantasy...
Do you have this pb ? Only the crack for V1 seems to work properly on my system.
Ho, by the way, I'm running WinXP pro, this might be the cause.

I'm running Wiz8 on WinXP and there are no problems. The v1.24 fixed wiz.exe and no-cd both appear 100% (naturally). Check your game installation and make sure you unarchived the 12/23 game patch with all its subdirectories correctly.
