Operation Flashpoint: newbie question

Hi folks,

I am fairly new to making backups of original CD games. I would like to backup my copy of OFP and was wondering if anyone could take me through the steps to making a working backup - including software, settings etc.? and which patches I will require to avoid SD2 and FADE? i.e. a general "how to".
