getting patches to work!!

sorry for the stupid question. just installed w2k and am in patch heaven. some game patches are exe.'s or zip's. when i execute them, sometimes i get an exe along with a nfo and a diz. what do i do with these files?. I thought i just should drop them in the game directory, but some patches say it should overwrite some files, and this never happens. help.

What I have seen of these files they are just information relating to who wrote the patches, you do no need to delete, rename or worry about these files. They are just a medium for some one (who ever patched the game) to put their signature on it.
