As a rule of thumb do you normally have to adjust the laser when fitting a Mod chip?? If so how and why!

Quick answer yes
backup cdrs are not as good as pressed cds.
The pits and lands on a cdr are not as difined as with a pressed commercial cd.
you need to adjust the laser to help read cdrs properly.
some games work ok but others will struggle.
You should find if you adjust your laser to just over 600 ohms it will work better with backups.

And how exactly does one do that?? I never had a problem on the PSX using CD's with Blue dye but then again i suppose that was a totally different model! Any pointers on how to do this and where to attach the old multimeter to get the correct reading!

Back to Adders for the details (did this yesterday as per ADDERS suggestion + it works fine!!!!) (wish i'd have taken a picture, as the laser unit in my SCPH 30003 looks nothing like any of the pictures on the megagames site tutorials!)

what does 600 ohms mean? how far is that in us ps2?

Set your multimeter to Resistance (Ohms).
the laser potentiometer has three pins, one at the top, and two at the bottom. Connect one of the multimeter probes to the pin at the top of the laser pot, and the other to the bottom right pin of the laser pot.

A new PS2 should read about 730 Ohms (as mine did yesterday!!)
I turned the laser pot clockwise about 10 degrees (new reading is now ~600 Ohms (suggested by Adders).

now spend the next hour putting the PS2 back together (mine was in some sort of armour plated stuff (SCPH 30003) and was a complete nightmare to strip down!.

Hey presto - all is cool !!!
