Are all ps2 games protected and if copied will they play without a chip?

http://www.sgt-dan.com has a list of games and patches to tell which are protected (many/most aren't but it varies by region sometimes).

All backups need a modchip to play them and certain protected games need patching for the boot method. Others play OK if you copy with CloneCD. Do you need further help on the principles? Use the PS2 forum please.
