PSX back-up Newbie questions...

Ok I'm new to backing up PSX games(even though I do for #####! and shiat), and I just got a PSX. Just a couple of questions:

1. You know those "boot CDs" on this site? I read on these on the boards, and people say you need a MOD-Chip to run it. OK... what the HELL is the use then? I could understand the cheat codes and stuff... but as a boot CD? That needs a MOD-Chip........

2. Any site that tells you how to the swap method, detailed? I'm gonna do this till I get the MOD-Chip or that "real" boot CD.

Most people use the [import player] bootcd to get around anti mod protection. It's used as a alternative to patching.
