PS2/PAL question

Hi all!

Wondering if someone can help me here. I've bought a PS2 console for my son as an xmas present (he is gonna freak out!) as well as a couple of games. Also got him the AR2 v2.0 chip and codedisk. A friend tested it with what I'm sure was a "backup" of Quake III Arena and, while it booted okay, the display was totally screwed. Colours looked just fine but the framerate was way off - looked like PAL-60 to me. All other operations work properly though.

The problem is that the TV doesn't have a vertical hold control and it cannot handle PAL-60 at all, only standard PAL-I (50hz). Are there patches to either the games or the machine to get it to work PAL-I all the time or am I going to have to (a) get a TV that can do PAL-60 or (b) tell him to forget about playing some of the games he can get from his friends?

BTW, I'm in South Africa but I think the console is a UK version - we fall into the same DVD zone (2) as the UK/Europe and I would think the PS2 consoles follow the same or similar regionalisation scheme. I'm a clueless newbie when it comes to these things and could use some advice.
