Why are my videos and voices so choppy?

Why are my videos and voices so choppy or non-existant. When I run my backups, I use a gamehunter (no mod-chip) and not only do some games not work, but the video on all of them is choppy and the sound doesn't work right. I used CD-Rwin to copy all of them (on 1X) with my Plextor 8/4/32A Strangely, the games work MUCH better on my friends PSX with the same mod-clip, but the video is still choppy (and loading times are longer than usual). I think it may be the system I use. One is a 5XXX series but the CD appeared to wobble because I am missing two of the ball bearings that hold the CD in. I #####d it in for a 1XXX series which plays them better, but still not great. Any tips please? I am new to this board. Thanks in advance!

Warlock is on a distinguished road
usually this occurs when you use a plugmod instead of a mod-chip.

Warlock is right, but this could also be due to your recording speed being set too fast or the use a cheap CDR's.

I used Imation and PNY 80 minute CD-Rs. Does the fact they are (I believe orange book) have anything to do with them not working? Also, I mentioned I burned all of them at 1X so that has nothing to do with it.

Sorry, had a momentary lapse of concentration!

An internal mo chip would work much better but as you have an SCPH 100x then i would also suggest adjusting the laser!

Open up your psx and you will see the laser assembly, there is a thin, almost see through copper coloured ribbon cable that connects to the mainboard. At the top of this ribbon you will see a small POT (Potentiometer) that you can twist from side to side to make the adjustment. You only need to make small adjustments to this and then re test. If the problem gets worse then twist the POT in the opposite direction.

CAUTION: Dont use a screwdriver to twist the pot as you could rip it off the ribbon cable, I find just using you little finger with light pressure the best method.

There are other adjustments that can be made to the SCPH 100x but you would need a multimeter or oscilloscope to set these up correctly!

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you for the helpful replies! I also have the 5XXX PSX I can work with as well. Do the missing ball bearings on the CD holder make a big difference? Some of the black plastic is also missing. Would it be better to mod this system or the 1XXX system? Being the 1XXX system, I am afraid the sucker is going to overheat (I think sony had to recall the early models). I would rather not tweak with the laser as I would not like to permently damage the system. Also, do 80-min CD-Rs have anything to do with games working or not working? Do the later systems work better when modded? Mod chips are do-able. Do you have any preference for a preticular mod-chip distributer? I will obviously go with a stealth chip if this is so. Thanks again spooky and everyone else who posted for all the helpful info.

I ran into this problem with perfect back-up copies when I would use a gameehancer, I had my second PlayStation mod-chipped and the problem was eliminated!!
