Hi topcat, i have had the same problem on several of the PS2's that i have chiped for friends. It seems that sometimes when you insert a game the drive doesnt completely lift the cd off the tray causing it to rub or scrape when the system is horizontal making it sound like something is broken. My solution to the problem was the same as your's, I reopened them it,cleaned it out and it worked fine afterwards. Also i have had a few games ruined from the bottoms getting scraped up on the tray when this happens.

I thought this was a problem with a lot of early PS2s.
Sony had a manufacturing fault.
