unprotected = protection removed
fixed = protection removed and (usually) additional cd check (if any) removed too
might be a good idea for you to read the faq?
and you might also want to pick 'nicer' thread titles

I though "unprotected" means an official exe that never had a protection, usally taken from a budget version or cover disc.

... that's why we need to 1. define them unambigiously in the FAQ and 2. use them consistently.

UnProtected EXE means that this EXE was taken from a version which does not have any protection and which can be used for a protected version of the game. So it is an unmodified original EXE

As Tippex already stated, they are from budget versions, covers disks or different countries.

Usually they are untested to work for the protected version of the game, this is ussually stated in the text

I know this thread is old, but I'd like to know if there's still need for an unprotected exe even if there's already a fixed exe available?

For example I've got these unprotected exe files for Civilization IV v1.74 and the addon Warlords v2.13 (both latest version available) that came with the US version of "Civilization IV - The Complete Edition" that is completely DRM-free. As you might know Beyond the Sword and Colonization are already unprotected with the 3.19 and 1.01 patches, but the European and original US editions of the two games mentioned before were still protected with SafeDisc 4. Only the US edition of Civ4 Complete was unprotected (for whatever reason).

Civilization IV 1.74:

Civilization IV Warlords 2.13:
http://www48.zippyshare.com/v/50931929/file.html

So in case you're interested in these kind of unprotected exe files I've got more (for example Sid Meier's Railroads, Spellforce 2 and Anno 1701). So let me know if I should upload these as well.

A'ight. Will collect all unprotected exe files that I have and upload them one by one. Is there anything I need to keep in mind like naming convention for the archives and compression method or are you going to re-compress them before actually uploading them to GCW?

Make sure you add notes for each archive:
- Game: <game name>
- Language: <game language>/MULTIx/EU/US/etc.
- Version: <game version>/ALL
- Description: No-CD EXE/mini image/etc.
- Instructions: <how to install if not obvious>
- Done by: <credits>
Then they will be added more easily. No, there are no naming conventions and submitted archives are not repacked.
