Have you tried, running in administrator mode and set compatibility to Windows 98? Anyways more Info would have been great, like graphic card, CPU, OS etc... I've tried compatibility mode, but it isn't working. I'm using XP, not Vista.
EA does have a listing in its Tech support for FF8, so I'm hoping they can help solve the problem. Not being sarcastic, nor did I mean to be. Eidos called me and told me they no longer support FF8, and Square Enix sent me to EA. Not 'on" anything, just remembered from previous experience. If they can't help, I'll be back...
