My games and Windows Vista Business
Now i tried to play these games (Overlord, Battlefield 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Ghost Recon Adv. Warfighter 2) and i have the same problem i've described in this thread (post #1 & #3) with each game.
Also the original discs (without crack) brings me this error, but it think it takes a few more minutes until the pc shut down. First i was thinking that DirectX10 contains all the components of DirectX9, so i haven't installed DX9. But now i installed DirectX9 and the problem still occurs. Does anyone have had the same problem and can tell me a solution? Or does anyone have a clue about this? My (new) system-specs: AsRock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Mainboard).... using the drivers that came with WinVistaBusiness 2x 1GByte Corsair DDR2-RAM PC2-5300 667Mhz Intel Pentium D 820 (DualCore 2,8 GHz) nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX (Leadtek).... using original nVidia driver v158.24 Realtek onBoard Sound 7.1.... using Realtek HD-Audio driver v1.70 Is it because of the DualCore processor? Do i need a programm to set a game to use only one core? (I heard there is a tool/driver for AMDs X2 processors) Should i install the original mainboard drivers? They are older than WinVistaBusiness.... EDIT: The Intel DualCore Patch for Vista (KB936357) is already installed.

Now i have tried the VIA Hyperion V5.12a (Mai 2007) drivers.
The problem (pc shut down after a few minutes of play) still occurs. I also tried to set the BF2.exe (Battlefield 2) to use only one core via TaskManager, but that also don't work. A friend of mine thinks it is either a heat-problem or a "not enough power"-problem. In my PC are only: - Mainboard+CPU+Ram - 400 GB harddisc - Geforce 7800 GTX with power connector (PCIe) - 5-ports USB2-card (PCI) - an intern DVD-ROM (now i bought one) - intern floppydisc-drive with integrated card-reader Always connected to USB2: - external dvd-writer - usb-hub (active) - hp psc2100 printer - external 500 GB harddisc - BlueTooth dongle - mouse + keyboard - logitech quickcam express Is this too much for my "old" 350W power supply? Could this be the problem? If i need a new power supply, how much watt should it have?

This has only happened since Vista im guessing?
I had a problem once with a Sapphire ATI card of a customers recently, and it wouldnt install Vista it kept BSODing during the video detection phase of the installation. It was the PSU, but it all had to do with the current levels going through the 12V rails. Its as if Vista is sucking the power from PSU's, which cant be right, or is Vista forcing other hardware to require more power for operation. I still havent figured it out yet. But as soon as I tried with a heavy duty PSU it worked. |

Watch the CPU temperature level with a hardware diagnostics/information software (and sometimes switch from the game to the desktop; or have the temperature logged into a file). Also, you might wanna enable the CPU temperature alarm in the BIOS setup (if you have such an option); it has an awful sound but if it starts sirening before the shutdown then it is definitely an overheating problem!

@Dab:
I bought a new mainboard with a dualcore processor. Before this i was having a ASUS board with AMD 3500+. All the other components of my pc are the same. Only the internal dvd-rom is new. Together with the new hardware i installed Windows Vista Business instead of my WinXP. The PC works very fine, only game wont work. @Joe: I have enabled the cpu-heat-alarm in bios and use the Speedfan-Meter gadget in Vista-Sidebar. The cpu temperature is never over 60°C when a game is running. I bought now a new power supply unit with 600W (for 70€ ).I hope it will help.

The new power supply unit was the solution.
It works now. Seems that Vista really take much more power than xp.

Yeah I said that :P
Its all to do with those 12v rails. It sucks the power right out of them, have no idea why, since they have enough power for each hardware easily. |
