the new kid in town

ok.. i'm a bit new at this but i am a quick learner... *grin*
ok.. i got the xps thing to do the patchin and stuff, and i browse threw to look at my games that i am going to backup and i have spyro the dragon so i guess we can use that as a example and i seen a patch for it and i d/led it and with that xps i goto start, run, then type command push enter and my ms dos(P.O.S.!!!) comes up and i type all that crap to get to the directory that the .xps file and the xps program is in.. i also have that iso image in there that i am going to patch.. ok.. i type xps spyro.xps spyro.iso and it says some stuff like opening iso file....completed.. and then it will say something like checking something and i get a failed on it.. does this mean that it doesn't need it or that i am not doing it right? this is what i am stumped on cause they don't say enough to comfort the "person" as to what the are doing or to what it has done.. any advise? guidence? plz..
