weird ps1 boot problem
Hi.
I Have a japanese v10 ps2 and I think there is a smartchip pro (or a clone of that chip) installed. Im not 100% sure of which chip I have but it does remove the ps2 logo and the console was purchased when the chip was popular. back to the problem. It boots ps2 games just fine, never had a problem, but when I try to load a ps1 game it just gives me a black screen and locks up. Ive had my ps2 since febuary 2004 and Ive always thought that it was a problem with the chip but now im not to sure. I just found out that hk silver's (factory pressed pirate copies) will boot. i also found that If I quickly swap the disk during the ps1 logo screen to another copy (or orignal), it will boot. does anyone here know why this is happening? I also have another problem. all my ps1 games are black and white. i dont have this problem with ps2 games (ive tried both pal and ntsc). plz help me. I also want to clarify that I want to load original and backup copies, not hk silvers. edit: Sorry for the english, im not a native speaker but I can write better than this.. just not at 5am. Hmm... difficult to say:
Does the machine go to a black screen and stay there indefinately until the machine is reset, or if left for five minutes does it return to the browser screen? Also, is any noise heard from the DVD-ROM drive during the black screen or does it remain silent? Another good indicator could also be whether the machine boots the PS1 discs to the 'PS logo' splash screen quickly, or does it go to the electron screen with the Browser and System Configuration options first, and then continue to boot to black screen?

2. there are some very faint ticking sounds. 3. when booting a ps1 hk silver it goes directly to the ps1 splash screen. |

Sounds like the CD Diode on your laser is starting to fail - which explains the black screen and ticking as the console has recognised the disc, but is failing to get the data.
The reason HK Silvers read to the splash screen is because as you say, they are pressed discs, which read much easier than a burned CD-R backup.

ive thought of this as well but to me that explanation doesnt add up because:
1. its been doing this since day 1. 2. while I can get a severely scratched hk silver to boot I cant get any original disks in prime condition to load. its weird, i know. Last edited by The Squig; 30-10-2006 at 03:13. |

Then i'd rip the chip out and see if that cures the problem...

. Try a PS2 cd-r game. My guess is you will have the same result as with the PS1 cd-r.

ps2 cdr boots fine. Im really starting to think that this problem is chip related.
I dont have the soldering skills nor a good enough soldering iron for a ps2 install but I was thinking. I can get the matrix infinity se clone chip for $10. I would rather get the modbo but I dont know of any swedish retailers who imports it. anyway. do you know if the soldering points are the same as my bluechip clone? coz if they are I could just solder the existing wires onto the new chip, right? also, I cant test the console without the chip since its a jap version. |
