extract contents of data1.cab?

How would I go about extracting the contents of a data1.cab file from a game? No matter what I do I can't get it to open. I'm trying to retrieve the cdsound and cdvideo folders from it. Help would be much appreciated since I don't have much experience with this technical stuff.

Try i5comp and i6comp (search for them on the Web).

I tried both of those. When I open the exe it automatically closes. I tried opening it in DOSbox, but then all that would say is that the icomp program can't be ran in dos mode. Isn't there another way or perhaps someone could do it for me?

Run the executables from a DOS prompt (or a proper file manager), not that idiotic Windows Explorer! (Yes, they won't run in DOSBox, they are Windows executables...)

That's interesting. I got it to work, but it didn't extract any of the the cdvideo or cdsound folders. I know they have to be in there because when I went to add/remove programs and clicked on modify it said those folders were on disc 1, yet those folders are specifically on the disc so I thought they'd be in the data1.cab. I then extracted data2.cab and it extracted the same couple of .bmp images it took from data1.cab. I'm confused.

Edit: When I tried to first extract the data2.cab it asked for a data2.hdr, which isn't listed in the cd directory. So I took data1.hdr and renamed it to 2. Oh, also when I extracted from data2.cab it had a bunch of .bik files that tried to extract but everyone of them came up as "check the installation medium." What does that mean?

You need to read the documentation. There's always data1.hdr ONLY (the index file) but data1.cab, data2.cab etc. are just successive (data) volumes of one large archive.

If uses exact/latest version of i5comp/i6comp, simple use
i5comp.exe x -r DATA1.CAB or i6comp.exe x -f DATA1.CAB command.
As you need additional informations for the unpacked files, becouse this
structure (as our dear JOE FORSTER/STA said very correct) are an
installer (!!). So additional ini/dll files copied into a temp folder and so on..
This is called INSTALLSHIELD v5x/v6x indexed installer with realtime CRC-
calculate/controller. Actually search Google for more informations, if you
are guess... Uff.. I said.. I'M OFF

Could always use Winpack, that's a GUI for i5/6comp.

What game are you trying to extract from RLN, looks like a Nancy Drew game going by the CDVIDEO and CDSOUND folders.

I'm using i6comp (isn't that the latest one?). And yes, Barry it's the latest Nancy game.

As I said I haven't done this before. I tried looking up tutorials on how to extract the files but really didn't find anything. The readme's/etc are confusing to me since I don't understand half of what it says. I realize it's an installer, which is why I was using i6comp. That's the only thing I really figured out from all the sites I came acrossed. As for actually getting it to work is the problem.

This is what I was doing to extract the files.

Quote:
i6comp x data1.cab *.* -e
Is that not how I'm supposed to extract the files?

@RLN

If you want to extract 'all' the files then just use:

i6comp x data1.cab

Make sure you have all the cab files and the data1.hdr file in the same directory as i6comp.exe.

then from the command prompt, go to the files directory and type the above command and press enter. all the files will be extracted to that directory.

Silly question, but why do you want to extract the CAB files? Why not just install the game and let it do it for you!

Grumpy, I used the line i6comp x data1.cab that you suggested but all I got was the same exact files I did when I used i6comp x data1.cab *.* -e. And the same error for all the other files it was trying to extract Check in the installation medium, which I have no idea what that means.

Barry, well I wanted to see if the CDSound & CDVideo folders had anything extra that what it was installing on my harddrive. The game plays both from the cd and the harddrive, hence the CD folders. Those folders aren't copied to the harddrive.

Here's the list of files that are only being extracted. I don't get anything else except these over and over again.
IsRes.dll , Bbrd1.bmp , Bbrd10.bmp , Bbrd11.bmp , Bbrd12.bmp , Bbrd13.bmp ,
Bbrd14.bmp , Bbrd15.bmp , Bbrd16.bmp , Bbrd17.bmp , Bbrd2.bmp , Bbrd3.bmp , Bbrd4.bmp , Bbrd5.bmp , Bbrd6.bmp , Bbrd7.bmp , Bbrd8.bmp , Bbrd9.bmp , corecomp.ini , ctor.dll , default.pal , GAME.ICO , GameuxInstallHelp.dll , iscript.dll , isrt.dll , iuser.dll , license.txt , nansil.bmp , NewNancy.bmp , objectps.dll , readme.txt , value.shl , binkw32.dll , CREManual.pdf , CREManual.txt , Game.exe , Game.ini , gdiplus.dll , NancyDrewOrderForm.pdf
